Is Virginia still a battleground state?

Now that John McCain has picked Sarah Palin to join him on the Republican ticket, will this have any impact on Virginia?

It’s hard to fathom, indeed. After all, Alaska and Virginia are separated by several thousand miles. Alaskans and Virginians, however, aren’t that far apart when it comes to politics.

Virginia and Alaska have both fallen in the Republican column for the last ten presidential elections. Going back further, both states belonged to Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and were both Republican in 1960. Basically, the states have voted for the same Presidential candidate since Alaska was admitted to the Union.

It’s easy to see why the states vote the same way. From Juneao to Jamestown, the second amendment reigns supreme. The politics in both states rely heavily on sportsmen and gun rights.

My question: Will Palin’s nomination have any effect on Virginia’s role in the upcoming election?

My answer: It’s hard to tell. Even in this, the year Vice Presidential speculation, how much impact a VP candidate will have on the electorate. If Palin is able to walk a straight line, and earn some name recognition, I feel like she could pull Virginia.

It will be interesting to see the numbers from SurveyUSA. Expect some new ones by the end of next week.
